For days, most of us have watched in horror and despair the news footage of the gulf coast areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina, many of us have contributed funds or goods to one organization or another in an attempt to offer a helping hand, and some of us have taken the extra step to become involved personally. I had to talk Richard out of his idea of loading up a chain saw and supplies and driving down to the gulf area - his idea that he could just do anything anyone asked and in some small part, help out. I must admit, I'm a little confused over the news stories. I'm watching thousands of stranded people - hungry, thirsty, helpless and angry - and then listening to various people in authority saying that we should NOT go to the area - it would just make things worse. While that makes logical sense, seeing how few authorized helpers have arrived does NOT make logical sense. Yesterday we received a call from a local fella we have done work for in the past asking if we would be willing to contribute web space/hosting and perhaps an email for a local effort. YES! Of course we would do something so simple if it will help in any way at all. We have quickly thrown together the initial web using this blog format for Chattanooga Disaster Rescue Efforts, Inc. - a newly formed organization. The website, www.chattanoogarescue.com, will serve to request aid from local individuals and provide a portal through which our fellow American citizens, forced to evacuate, will be able to put to ease the minds of their relatives and friends. We applaud the efforts of Holly Christopher, Metropolitan Tabernacle Church and the many other local churches who have spearheaded this rescue effort, and pray for safe travel today as the caravan of buses travels to bring families back to our area for refuge.
