Breakthrough could lead to new treatments
Scientists have discovered that it may be possible to repair a patient's kidney using cells taken from their own body.

They have shown for the first time that cells in bone marrow are capable of turning into kidney cells.

The breakthrough could lead to new ways to treat kidney damage caused by cancer and other diseases.

It could also mean that doctors may eventually be able to restore function to patients suffering from kidney failure, and may pave the way to new gene therapy for kidney diseases.

Does anyone have any update on the development of this article from 2001

Glad to hear you're doing great.  I'm almost finished posting about our story.  You can read it here: http://homeschooling.about.com/ub/6/a/000144.htm

I will have to write about the breathing treatments, I had forgotten about that! :) My husband thought he was doing so good at it until they told him that old ladies do better! :)

Congratulations on your very brave deed.  My sister did the same for me on 30th June 2000, after four years of dialysis.  She says she forgets about the donation, unless reminded.

She has no side effects from her loss of a kidney.  I, on the other hand, have a new life.  I think your father in law to be will take a good 12 months before he is firing on all cylinders.  I know for quite a few months my body had to adjust to all the new pills and potions.  He will have to keep to a strict diet, drink as much fluid as he can possibly force down and eventually he will be able to relax his diet.  The best memory I have, after the transplant was sitting in a pub in Chester watching England play football and Becham scoring in the final minute to get through to the world cup finals.  I had a pint of lager in my hand and the sun was shining.  I just felt good to be alive.  I'm sure your father in law will always be grateful.  You deserve a medal.
